One role I had at early web personalization software firm ATG (Art Technology Group, acquired by Oracle) was to define and share how to design web applications with ATG software. Two artifacts from that work are an interactive app to explore and learn about the process and a whitepaper that was shared with potential and existing clients.
Rather than consisting of .html pages that included all text and image content, ATG applications used code that called in text and images depending on a set of rules. This diagram was used to explain the component and template concept to designers working on web applications running ATG’s personalization software.
